Calgary’s chinook winds create a freeze-thaw pattern unlike anywhere else in Canada. A chinook can raise the air temperature from −20°C to +10°C in a matter of hours – sometimes within the same afternoon – then drop it back just as fast when the wind shifts. That’s not one deep freeze and one spring thaw: it’s dozens of rapid freeze-thaw cycles through a single winter, each one expanding and contracting water in the sub-base.
A base that holds water during these swings will heave, settle, and shift repeatedly. Over two or three Calgary winters, that damage becomes visible at the surface – uneven areas, wrinkles, or settlement that can’t be fixed without pulling the surface up and rebuilding the base underneath. We design every Calgary sub-base with drainage layers that move water out of the aggregate fast enough that it’s not sitting in the base when the next chinook-driven freeze hits.
Calgary’s soil makes this more challenging. Most of the city sits on expansive clay that swells when wet and contracts when it dries or freezes. That clay movement works in the same direction as the freeze-thaw stress – both pushing the base around. We assess clay conditions at each Calgary site and engineer the sub-base to provide both thermal protection from chinook cycling and physical separation from clay movement below.

They damage the base beneath them if it’s not designed for it. Chinooks can cycle temperatures by 30°C in hours, repeatedly freezing and thawing water trapped in the sub-base. Over a couple of Calgary winters, that causes visible heave and settlement at the surface. We design Calgary bases with drainage that removes water from the aggregate before the next freeze event, which is what prevents this damage.
Yes. We install non-toxic turf systems with drainage designed to handle pet use. The turf drains urine and rinse water through the backing, and we specify infill materials that are safe for pets. We’ve seen increasing demand for pet-friendly turf in Calgary’s residential market, particularly from homeowners who want a low-maintenance yard that stays clean and usable year-round.
It affects both. Even a residential backyard installation in Calgary needs a sub-base that accounts for clay movement. The scale is different – a backyard installation is less complex than a full sports field – but the engineering principle is the same: separate the surface from the clay below it.
Yes. We provide maintenance services for Calgary turf installations, including infill top-up, seam inspection and repair, debris clearing, and seasonal care. Regular maintenance extends the life of the surface and keeps it performing as intended.
