Edmonton has a genuinely different climate from Calgary, even though they’re both in Alberta. Calgary gets chinooks – rapid, repeated freeze-thaw cycling driven by warm Pacific air. Edmonton doesn’t. Edmonton’s winters are long, sustained, and deeply cold, with temperatures regularly dropping below −30°C during cold snaps and staying below freezing for months at a stretch. Frost penetrates deeper into the ground in Edmonton than in Calgary, and the spring thaw, when it arrives, releases large volumes of water into the ground quickly.
For outdoor surface construction, this means the base engineering for an Edmonton project is designed for depth rather than speed. In Calgary, the drainage layer needs to move water out of the base fast enough to keep up with repeated chinook cycling. In Edmonton, the aggregate profile needs to be deep enough to provide genuine frost protection through a longer and deeper freeze period, and the drainage layer needs to handle the high-volume spring snowmelt that happens when temperatures rise in April and May. We engineer both differently because the failure mode is different.
Edmonton’s soil profile is largely expansive clay, similar to Calgary’s. The same separation principles apply: the sub-base needs to isolate the surface from clay swelling and contraction below. Combined with the deeper frost, an Edmonton base design is typically more substantial than a Calgary one for the same surface type.
