Long winters, spring thaw, and wide seasonal temperature swings make base preparation and drainage especially important here. Conditions vary a lot across the province, so instead of applying one standard Manitoba profile, we assess each site individually. The goal stays the same either way: a stable, well-drained foundation that can handle seasonal moisture and frost movement.
Glacial Lake Agassiz left behind extensive clay and silt deposits across parts of southern Manitoba, including the Red River Valley, while other parts of the province have very different soil profiles. That’s exactly why site-specific assessment matters so much here. Where clay-rich soils show up, shifts in moisture and freezing conditions can lead to ground movement if the base and drainage aren’t designed to account for it.
Depending on the project, our base designs may bring together engineered aggregate, drainage layers, geotextile separation, and grading to manage moisture and seasonal movement. Bottom line: a sports field or court in Manitoba needs to be designed for what’s happening beneath it, not copied from a project built somewhere else in the country.

That’s why we design the sub-base and drainage system around the specific property, so water is less likely to get trapped beneath the finished surface when temperatures drop.

Spring thaw is a real factor, but the right drainage approach still comes down to the individual property, not a province-wide template.
